Is there a way to test diesel fuel?
Description. Test your diesel fuel for contamination. Simply dip a 4-in-1 test swab in your fuel tank and check the test chart to determine fuel quality and the presence of contamination (water, rust, sludge/asphaltenes).
A cetane number is the measure of the quality of the diesel . Higher cetane number indicates that the fuel ignites more readily when sprayed over hot compressed air.
ASTM D975 is the Standard Specification for Diesel Fuel Oils. It is not one test, but rather, it is the specification that describes 13 tests and their acceptable limits, which a diesel fuel must meet at the time of delivery.
Once the contaminated fuel gets into your vehicle, you may start experiencing issues such as power loss, spluttering and involuntary speed changes. These are signs that the fuel isn't burning as it should do because of the water, or perhaps because the sludge is restricting fuel flow to the engine.
The most accurate way to test fuel delivery is by using a flowmeter.
The diesel hydrometer is an instrument used to measure the density of the diesel you intend to buy. The quality diesel will show 0.850(DPR standard) which is the density of a good diesel fuel.
The density of petroleum diesel is about 0.85 kg/l – about 15–20% higher than the density of gasoline, which has a density of approximately 0.70–0.75 kg/l.
A premium diesel has a higher cetane number, better lubricity and includes detergents that provide injector-cleaning capability versus standard #2 diesel. Cetane measures a fuel's ignition delay. Higher cetane equals a shorter delay and better ignition quality for quicker start-ups and less pollution.
This also works the other way round: when a fuel truck is weighed on a weighbridge before and after it was filled with fuel. The difference between the weights can then be used to calculate the filled volume thanks to the known apparent density measured on a sample by a digital density meter.
The EN 590 standard is the European diesel fuel specification for low sulphur content diesel and describes the properties diesel fuel must meet if it is to be used in automobiles. This specification of diesel is the grade required by a diesel-engine road vehicle (DERV) and the majority of agricultural machinery.
What does cetane number of diesel fuel measure?
While cetane number is the measure of combustion quality of diesel oil or it is the measure of the ignition delay, the higher the cetane number of diesel the shorter the ignition delay, and the greater the fuel quality, and vice versa. A short delay affords more time for diesel fuel to burn completely.
Diesel fuel is also considered a lubricant, so if you use regular gas when you are not supposed to, it does not allow the fuel injector pump to be properly lubricated. Gasoline detonates earlier, so when it is wrongly added to a diesel vehicle, it can cause engine knocking, misfiring, and damage.
Studies have determined within 28 days of storage diesel fuel #2 begins to become contaminated and start to degrade. Diesel fuel can only be stored from 6 to 12 months on average — sometimes longer under the best conditions.
Diesel engines will run on a lot of different types of fuel (including biodiesel and leftover frying oil), but they will not run on gasoline. Mixing in a little amount of gasoline with diesel is a bad idea, but might not be catastrophic. A large amount of gasoline will cause significant damage to a diesel engine.
' In reality, there is no expiration date on diesel per se, but the performance of your diesel fuel is affected the longer you store it. In fact, storing diesel without properly treating it can lead to all kinds of issues, not only for the fuelitself, but for any vehicle you decide to put the fuel in later.
Darkened Fuel
Normal undyed diesel fuel is a beautiful amber-green color. The same fuel which has started to degrade will darken. This is because heavier components of the fuel blend are no longer dissolved in the fuel, but are coming out of solution and floating freely in the fuel.
Diesel Extreme is the best additive in the game. Reduced fuel economy
Your fuel economy will worsen when you force your diesel engine to overwork with a clogged fuel injector. The engine isn't receiving the appropriate amount of fuel for its combustion. As a result, it will add stress to the injector to get additional fuel.

What is a dip test for diesel?
These fuel / diesel bug dipslides test for a total bacteria count on one side and yeasts and moulds (fungi) on the other side. These dipslides feature red spot dye on the bacteria testing side which means that the colonies will show as red spots. This makes the bacteria colonies easy to view and count.

The Engineering ToolBox reports the density of number 1 diesel at 54.6 lb/ft3 at 59°F (15°C). Converted to pounds per gallon, that comes to about 7.3 pounds per gallon—a little higher than number 2 diesel (source).

The main way to measure fuel quality is by determining its cetane number, which highlights the speed and efficiency of combustion. Other tests measure stability and contamination levels, which also affect how well it functions.
That's why many gas stations label the nozzles with their respective octane ratings and will also often color-code them to indicate fuel type to help ensure you don't fill up with the wrong gas: Green: Diesel Fuel. Yellow: E85 Gasoline (should only be used by FlexFuel capable vehicles)
Gasoline is naturally clear, white, or slightly amber. Diesel comes out clear or yellow.
Can you light diesel with a lighter?
Using a lighter to light the diesel will take some time. Only at extremely high pressure would diesel vaporize before igniting. Whether the diesel will light with a lighter will depend on its flash point. If the temperature of the lighter is below 100°F, it will not light the diesel.
Whether its road diesel or red diesel, your fuel should appear clear and bright. Regardless of it being yellow or red, you should be able to see through it similarly to water.
Filtration is just one stage of fuel polishing – a technical cleaning process that helps remove sediment, water, and microbial contamination from diesel fuel. During this process, the fuel is filtered from the tank utilizing a special process which incorporates filtration, centrifuges, and coalescers.
The fuel appearance is not clear and bright
If it is looking cloudy or dark, this indicates contamination. If it is looking cloudy, there could be water in the fuel. Microbes usually occur when water is present in the diesel, so keep this in mind when assessing the condition of your fuel.
The only way to kill microbial contamination is to use a quality biocide. Once the system is cleaned and treated, periodic biocide treatments help to maintain the level of cleanliness. Fuel quality management includes the regular removal of free water and the use of a biocide.
For decades, it has been a common misconception that the dark sludge forming in your fuel tank is actually “algae”. As a result, many still refer to it as such today. In reality, what you are actually witnessing is an over-proliferation of microbes in the fuel.
To solve this problem or prevent this from happening to your car, we recommend Clean Up 101 for petrol or Clean Up 201 for diesel. This additive is not just for cleaning the fuel system but also: It kills the bacteria in the tank. Mixes with water, water is burned with it and disappears from the tank.
The first signs will be small black specks in your clear pre-filters. To find out how bad it is, you have to inspect inside your fuel tank. That can best be done by removing the fuel sending unit. If it is all black like you see in this picture you probably have algae growth in your tank.
